I’m not really sure what started it, but I thought to myself one day, “you know, I bet a racing game with a steering wheel would be a lot of fun.”
I decided to give it a shot. I did a bunch of research on finding a steering wheel that would work with Linux and I landed on the Moza R5 bundle with direct drive.
I got some parts ordered and waited for them to arrive. Part of this was a big waiting game. I was looking for a particular stand for putting all of this hardware on rather than clamping it to my desk.
This specific wheel stand was sold out everywhere for a long time. It did pop up on Amazon for 40 dollars over retail. I bought it because I was tired of waiting and wondering if this thing was going to come back in stock anywhere.
I am still waiting for some of the parts that I ordered. I did put the pedals on the floor and clamped the steering wheel to my desk to get started.
It takes a little bit of time to get used to but it was a lot of fun. I haven’t used a direct drive wheel before but it proved to be a great decision going that route with my setup.
I have the 12" round wheel mod coming to replace the 11" D-shaped wheel that comes with the R5 bundle. I also have the handbrake on its way as well. I currently have the sequential shifter and I got the brake pedal upgrade kit for the SRP Lite pedals and the Alien Mods loadcell upgrade kit for the brake.
I haven’t played anything since getting the stand and other parts after that initial few hours of races.
Right now I mostly play Rally games. That is the reason behind the setup I am going with. I spend quite a bit of time in Rush Rally 3 and Rush Rally Origins by Brownmonster Games. Both of these games are excellent by the way.
I want to have the whole setup complete before I get started. I am getting close with everything. Parts should be arriving within the next week.
I plan on playing a lot more racing games as well beyond Rally. I found a group that has events of different teams competing in various racing games. Currently I plan to participate in the September event coming up in Assetto Corsa Competizione. This group is a bunch of Dads that race later in the evenings after getting the kids down for the night which is exactly what I need to do. I should fit right into this group.
I’m looking forward to racing once I get the setup completed. Still waiting on the last few parts and I will get it set up and racing.
