Happy New Year!
This is that part of the year when many people come up with new years resolutions in an attempt to change some behavior about themselves for the new year. I have a few but there is one that I want to talk about today.
In 2023 I want to try to read a little bit everyday. I usually do end up reading something on a web page or something in one of my text books for school. For this reading challenge I am talking about real books that I will likely read on my Kindle.
My wife has had a Kindle for several months and she enjoys reading on it and I thought that I would like to read more as well. I thought, “What is a better way to spend my time than scrolling through social media? Maybe I could read.”
This brings up an interesting point about reading. I always end up reading non-fiction books as I can rarely get into novels and any type of fiction. That is not to say that I haven’t ever read any fiction at all, It is rare when I do.
My wife and I had a discussion about this as she prefers the opposite. She likes her murder mystery and thriller style novels. I am currently reading ‘Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come: One Introvert’s Year of Saying Yes.’ I am roughly half way through this one but it is quite funny and enjoyable. I can also relate to a lot of the stuff Jessica Pan talks about because I am an introvert myself.
I do not plan on saying yes to everything for a year though. This book was recommended to my after reading ‘Taking the Work Out of Networking: An Introvert’s Guide to Making Connections That Count.’ You may notice a theme here but these books are my version of self-help books.
Not everything that I read is related to this subject though. I just finished ‘Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World’ by Cal Newport. This is why I decided to put myself up to the challenge to read everyday instead of wasting time on Facebook.
I also listened to ‘Obfuscation: A User’s Guide for Privacy and Protest’ in audio-book format. Obfuscation is an interesting topic that I want to learn more about. This book has been on my list to read for a while since I study this type of thing.
I also have ‘The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living’ by Meik Wiking and ‘Permanent Record’ by Edward Snowden, waiting to be checked out at the library.
I have plenty of stuff to read in the coming year. Having all of these books lined up to read may help push me to read everyday and accomplish this goal that I have.
This post is not really tech related but its important to me nonetheless.
I hope all of those that are reading this have a happy new year as well.
Until next time.
