I am Shane.
Ever since I was a kid, I have had an interest in technology. I began at an early age exploring computers and trying my best to figure out how they work. I was late going to college but I eventually graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in cyber-security. When I started I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I had a professor early on tell me “based on the questions you ask, and the input you provide to our class discussions, I think you would excel in the cyber-security field. I took that and ran with it although I did not end up in the security field.
I am an aerospace engineer and I get to use Linux everyday. That is fine by me even without having much to do with cyber-security. If you learn anything about me, you will know that I am passionate about the open source community, and I am not shy about it.
What else is there about me that makes me who I am? I am a Christian, a husband, and a father. I am likely not the typical person you would think that enjoys technology as much as I do. There was a point in time in my life, if I wasn’t working, I was fishing. I have always lived in areas close to the water and have always loved to fish. I love fish. I have a fish room in my house in Animal Crossing, and I am not far behind it in reality. I have never tried a saltwater tank, but I want to. I am also in the nitrogen cycle process for an axolotl. I have spent a great deal of time researching these guys and how to successfully care for one. Axolotl coming soon!
I also have a German Shorthaired Pointer. He does not hunt though. He is a pet more than anything. I also love plants and nature. If you were to see my desk area in my office, it has the asthetic of being in the woods.
Beyond animals and plants, I love to 3D print. I typically make things that are useful instead of making toys and things like that. Although, I have printed things for fun. I have printed two chess sets. Games. One is a log that rolls up and you can store the pieces inside of the log. The other is a cactus that also unrolls and lets you store the pieces in the pot. Once again, that nature asthetic.
I do not play many video games but I do occasionally. I have a few RC cars and a drone so that is another hobby I have. I haven’t participated in it as often since the kids have arrived. I enjoy reading books, listening to audio books and podcasts, and learning. I do not care for fiction books. If it isn’t somewhat educational, I am not interested.
I also have an interest in cooking. Not just because it is necessary to survive, but I do a good bit of barbeque with my family. I just enjoy making things. That is most of what I enjoy doing. I built my computer, I built my keyboard, I made my house, by 3D printing. I have printed a few pairs of headphones. I have a link saved for a pair of speakers that you can buy the hardware for and 3D print the enclosure for. I would have done this already, but neither of my printers are large enough to print them.
Whatever I am doing, I try my best to incorporate technology into it. Technology can be a distraction or it can help you in so many other areas of your life. These are my adventures with technology that I plan to share with you.
Nice to meet you.
